The Journey of Chrystia Freeland: From Journalist to Deputy Prime Minister of Canada

Chrystia Freeland is a Canadian politician, journalist, and author. She was born on August 2, 1968, in Peace River, Alberta, to a Ukrainian father and an American mother. Her family moved to Canada when she was eight years old, and she grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Freeland attended Harvard University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Russian history and literature. After graduating, she went on to Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar and received a Master of Studies degree in Slavonic studies.

Freeland started her career as a journalist, working for various news outlets such as the Financial Times, The Globe and Mail, and Reuters. During her time as a journalist, she covered major events such as the collapse of the Soviet Union, the rise of oligarchs in Russia, and the European economic crisis. In 2013, she left journalism to enter the world of politics, becoming a member of the Liberal Party of Canada. She was elected as a Member of Parliament in 2015 and has since held numerous positions, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of International Trade. In 2019, she made history by becoming the first female Deputy Prime Minister of Canada.
